Borussia Dortmund were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at home against Lille in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash on Tuesday, with a second-half equaliser from Hakon Haraldsson cancelling out Karim Adeyemi’s opener.
Dortmund appeared in control early on when Adeyemi fired a low shot into the net on 22 minutes, but Lille capitalised on slack defending in the 68th minute. Jonathan David threaded the ball to Haraldsson, who slotted home past goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to level the score.
Dortmund captain Emre Can was critical of his side’s performance, particularly in the second half, and expressed hope they could improve in the return leg next week. Lille coach Bruno Genesio, on the other hand, felt his side was in a strong position ahead of the second leg, despite the draw.
Dortmund, struggling domestically this season, now face the challenge of securing a win in France to keep their European hopes alive. Lille, aiming to reach their first-ever Champions League quarter-finals, will be looking to build on their strong performance in the second leg.
