Borussia Dortmund bounced back from conceding an early goal to overcome Lille 2-1 in France during the second leg of their Champions League last-16 match on Wednesday, securing a 3-2 victory on aggregate and advancing to the quarter-finals.
Jonathan David put Lille ahead early in the match, giving the French team the edge in the tie following last week’s 1-1 draw in the first leg. However, Emre Can equalised for Dortmund by converting a penalty in the 54th minute, and Maximilian Beier then scored a brilliant winner for last season’s runners-up.
Dortmund will face Barcelona in the quarter-finals next month, having previously lost 3-2 at home to the Catalan side during the league stage in December.
This result significantly uplifts Dortmund and their newly appointed coach, Niko Kovac, particularly as the team currently sits in 10th place in the Bundesliga.
It is a considerable disappointment for Lille, who were aiming to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in their history after an exceptional performance during the league stage.
They completed the league phase in seventh place out of 36 teams, defeating Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, earning draws against Juventus and scoring six goals against Feyenoord.
Lille seemed to be in a strong position after managing to draw in Dortmund last week, and they took the lead in the tie when Canada forward David netted a goal in the fifth minute.
Ismaily’s low cross from the left was directed towards the goal by David, somehow slipping through the legs of Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. This was David’s seventh goal in this season’s Champions League, but it inspired the visitors.
Dortmund had a chance to equalise, thwarted by a stunning double save from Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier during a goalmouth scramble in the 20th minute.
Dortmund maintained their attacking pressure and were rewarded with a penalty shortly after the half-time break when Serhou Guirassy fell under contact from Thomas Meunier.
Can confidently converted the penalty, and shortly afterwards, Karim Adeyemi struck the bar for Dortmund before they ultimately found the winner in the 65th minute.
Guirassy, who has scored 10 goals in the Champions League this season, assisted Beier, who still had work to do as he controlled the ball in the box before delivering a powerful shot high into the net.
Lille could not recover from this setback and exited the competition in the last 16, just like in their two prior appearances, in 2007 and 2022.
