At least 28 people were reportedly killed in a drone strike on a market in central Sudan on Sunday, a rights monitoring group said Monday.
The attack occurred in North Kordofan, a region experiencing ongoing clashes between armed groups.
Emergency Lawyers, which monitors civilian harm in the conflict, said several drones struck the al-Safiya market in the town of Sodari while civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, were present.
“Last night, drones bombed the Al-Safiya market, located northeast of Sodari locality in North Kordofan State, killing 28 people and injuring dozens more, according to initial reports, with the death toll expected to rise,” the group said.
“The attack occurred at a time when the market was bustling with civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, which exacerbated the humanitarian tragedy.”

The group described the death toll as preliminary and did not confirm who carried out the strike.
Sodari lies along a strategic corridor in North Kordofan connecting several towns and trade routes.
The region has seen an increase in drone activity in recent months, affecting towns and villages in the area.
Since April 2023, the broader conflict in Sudan has displaced millions and caused widespread humanitarian challenges, including food insecurity and infrastructure damage.
Humanitarian agencies continue to monitor the situation, and authorities are reporting efforts to assist affected communities.
