Former Ajax and Dutch international footballer Quincy Promes has been extradited from Dubai to the Netherlands, Dutch prosecutors confirmed on Friday.
This extradition follows his conviction for involvement in smuggling over a tonne of cocaine.
In February 2024, a Dutch court sentenced the 33-year-old former winger to six years in prison after finding him guilty of helping to smuggle 1,363 kilograms (3,000 pounds) of cocaine from Brazil in 2020.
Separately, Promes had already received an 18-month prison sentence and was ordered to pay compensation for stabbing his cousin over a stolen necklace. Appeals are currently ongoing in both cases.
A spokeswoman for Dutch prosecutors confirmed local media reports that Promes was en route to the Netherlands after his extradition.
The former winger had been arrested in Dubai in March 2024, though Dutch prosecutors stated that the arrest was for a local offence unrelated to his cases in the Netherlands.
Promes earned 50 caps for the Netherlands, scoring seven goals, and was part of the squad that lost to the Czech Republic in the last 16 of the Euro 2020 championships (played in 2021 due to Covid).
He has not represented his national team since. In 2019, he joined Dutch giants Ajax from Spanish club Sevilla in a 15-million-euro transfer.
In 2021, he moved to Moscow to play for Spartak, where he had a previous successful stint from 2014 to 2018, during which he was named Russia’s footballer of the year.
