Nigeria’s presidential task force on Ebola said Wednesday that the country has the capacity to contain the current outbreak, crediting existing screening protocols for the rapid detection of its index case.

Speaking after an emergency meeting in Abuja, task force chairman and presidential chief of staff Femi Gbajabiamila said the government had been preparing since the virus emerged in East Africa in June.

“Since the issue of Ebola came up in June, there have been about 44,000 flights in and out of Nigeria,” Gbajabiamila told reporters.

“The passenger with the disease showed no symptoms… and it was the identification process and the protocols that were put in place that enabled the quick identification.”

He urged the public to cooperate with health authorities.

“We must build community trust and avoid panic, but it’s also important to state clearly that this is a collaborative effort between the government and the people,” he said.

Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate said authorities were diligently tracing and isolating contacts of the imported case.

He noted that the national government, alongside the World Health Organisation, Africa CDC and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), had activated an incident management system.

“They are working day and night diligently, and our hospital capabilities are also activated, such that we can aim to contain this case,” Pate said, adding that states have adequate response plans.

“We have the resources, and we’re mobilising those capabilities.”

Pate warned against the spread of misinformation, which he said could cause unnecessary panic.

He expressed confidence in the country’s response, pointing to its successful containment of the 2014 outbreak.

“We are confident that if we continue in this direction, we will emerge out of this crisis in a much stronger place,” he said.
