Ebonyi Governor Sacks Amasiri Leaders

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has dismissed all government appointees from the Amasiri community, dissolved the community’s development union leadership, removed all village heads, and dethroned the traditional ruler with immediate effect.

The governor decided on a violent attack on Okporojo Community in Oso Edda, Edda Local Government Area, where assailants reportedly beheaded four people and carted away their heads.

Nwifuru announced the sweeping measures on Saturday during an on-the-spot assessment visit to Okporojo.

He addressed residents, community leaders, security agencies, and government officials, expressing deep anger over the killings, which occurred on January 29, 2026, when armed men allegedly invaded the community and set houses ablaze.

Describing the attack as tragic and unacceptable, the governor said he never imagined such brutality could occur in Ebonyi State.

He ordered the immediate dissolution of the Amasiri Town Development Union and its executive members, withdrew the traditional ruler’s certificate, and removed all village heads across Amasiri autonomous communities.

He also sacked all government appointees from Amasiri extraction, including the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Amari Omaka (SAN), and directed affected officials to hand over all government property, including official vehicles, to the Secretary to the State Government.

Nwifuru assured the Okporojo community that the government would decisively deal with those responsible for the killings and stressed that the lives lost would not be in vain.

He urged residents to remain calm and avoid retaliatory violence, warning that further provocation could push the situation beyond control.

The governor noted that the conflict had persisted for years despite several reconciliation efforts and boundary agreements, which he said some parties failed to respect.

He warned that the state would no longer tolerate lawlessness or disregard for the rule of law.

Addressing the Amasiri community directly, Nwifuru cautioned that violence would never provide a lasting solution and urged residents to rethink their actions.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring lasting peace in Edda and promised tangible improvements in the area by next year.

Videos circulating online showed burning houses as residents appealed for urgent intervention from the state government and security agencies.
