ECOWAS Slashes Air Fares Across Region

In a bid to transform regional air travel, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced measures to reduce the cost of flying across West Africa, effective January 1, 2026.

At their December 2024 Summit in Abuja, ECOWAS Heads of State and Government approved the abolition of air transport taxes and a 25 per cent reduction in passenger and security charges across all member states. The decision aligns with the Supplementary Act on Aviation Charges, Taxes, and Fees.

The initiative addresses long-standing concerns over the high cost of air travel in the region, which has historically hindered tourism, trade, and the free movement of people and goods.

To ensure effective implementation, the ECOWAS Commission will monitor progress through a Regional Air Transport Economic Oversight Mechanism. Officials expect the reforms to result in lower airfares, increased passenger traffic, stronger regional airlines, and deeper regional integration.

With these measures, ECOWAS aims to make West African skies more accessible and affordable, fostering greater economic and social connectivity across the region.
