Edo State Escalates War on Cultism, Vows Legal Action Against Black Axe Group

The Edo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, has issued a stern warning to cult groups operating in the state and is now taking legal steps to address the recent surge in cult-related violence and killings. In particular, the government is focusing on the Neo Black Movement, widely known as Black Axe, following public admissions from the group’s leaders, who have identified themselves and condemned the demolition of a building connected to their activities. This acknowledgment has confirmed their association with the property, making them liable for prosecution under the law.

The building in question was more than just a structure; it was a key location for planning violent acts throughout Benin City and other areas in Edo State. The government has made it clear that it will not allow such criminal activities to flourish under its watch, and the demolition was a direct response to reliable intelligence. This action was carried out in compliance with the Anti-cultism Law, which was passed by the Edo State House of Assembly.

In addition to this, the government has responded to recent claims made by the group about renovating six public schools in the state. The Edo State Government is demanding full disclosure from the Neo Black Movement, insisting that they provide a list of the schools, documentation proving the renovations, and an official letter of approval from the government. If this information is not presented, the group will face legal action for defamation and misrepresentation.

To further strengthen law and order, the state plans to build a divisional police station on the site where the demolished cult-linked building once stood. This station will provide a permanent security presence, offering protection to law-abiding citizens in the area.

The government has made it clear that more demolitions of properties connected to cult groups will follow. Governor Okpebholo, in his role as the Chief Security Officer of the state, remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of Edo State’s residents. He has stated unequivocally that no cult group will be allowed to operate in the state, and any group found doing so will face immediate dismantling and legal consequences.

Governor Okpebholo further emphasised that he has no ties—now or in the past—with any cult organisation and is solely focused on the safety of the people of Edo State. The administration remains firm in its commitment to eradicate cultism in all forms, and the anti-cultism law will continue to be enforced with full rigour.
