The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has strongly rejected claims by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed that political opponents—particularly the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike—are using the Commission to persecute him and his aides.

The EFCC described the allegations as baseless and misleading, stressing that it operates as an independent, non-partisan agency mandated to combat economic and financial crimes without favour or malice.

The Commission condemned attempts to portray it as a tool of political interests.

It said Mohammed’s claim that Mr Wike influenced its activities in Bauchi State is unfounded, noting that no political office holder can interfere with its investigations.

The EFCC noted that Mohammed was already standing trial for money laundering before becoming governor, and only constitutional immunity halted the case. It asked who influenced the Commission to investigate and charge him in 2016.

The Commission stated that it has already placed evidence against some Bauchi State officials before the court, allowing the public to judge whether the case reflects a vendetta or a thorough investigation. It explained that Mohammed appears in the charge because he served as the approving authority in the state.

The EFCC dismissed claims of terrorism financing allegations as desperate, insisting it merely enforces existing laws and would fail in its duty if it ignored offences under the law.

It urged politicians to prioritise public accountability, criticising opposition figures who cry persecution only when their members face investigation but remain silent when ruling party members are charged. The Commission cited the recent arraignment of a senior ruling party member without claims of bias.

The EFCC advised Governor Mohammed to focus on governing Bauchi State and allow the Commission to continue cleansing Nigeria’s financial system in line with its mandate.
