Egypt to Host U-20 AFCON After Cote d’Ivoire Withdrawal

The Confederation of African Football has announced Egypt as the host of the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in a statement released on Thursday.

Côte d’Ivoire was initially set to host the youth tournament from April 26 to May 18, but withdrew just a month before the event. According to CAF, the West African nation withdrew due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

“The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) has now granted the Egyptian Football Association (“EFA”) and the Egyptian Government the rights to host the TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025.” The statement read.

Egypt to Host U-20 AFCON After Cote d’Ivoire Withdrawal

Egypt previously hosted the last edition of this competition and will take on this responsibility once more. The 2025 U-20 AFCON is now scheduled to kick off on April 27.

The Flying Eagles are in Group B of the tournament alongside the new hosts, Morocco and South Africa. The top two squads from each group will automatically qualify for the knockout stage.

Additionally, the two best third-placed teams will secure quarter-final positions. The semi-final teams will automatically qualify for Chile’s 2025 U-20 World Cup.
