At least eight people have tragically lost their lives following a horrific multi-truck accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, close to Kara Bridge heading out of Lagos, early Thursday morning.
The deadly crash, which took place around the Berger area, involved multiple heavy-duty vehicles and caused significant destruction. Eyewitnesses reported that one of the trucks plunged into the Kara River, while two others collided and burst into flames, sending thick clouds of smoke billowing into the sky and creating panic among drivers.
Traffic on the busy highway came to a standstill as emergency responders rushed to the scene. Officers from the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) teamed up with firefighters to manage the situation, clear debris, and help victims trapped in the wreckage.
Footage from the scene revealed charred vehicles, rising smoke, and frantic rescue efforts as officials worked tirelessly to control the fire and recover bodies.

In an official statement shared on its X (formerly Twitter) account, LASTMA confirmed the tragic news, reporting eight fatalities from the crash.
“There’s been a report of a multi-vehicle accident involving a truck and a container-laden trailer that caught fire. Another truck spilled its load of biscuit cartons onto the road, while a fourth vehicle, also carrying a container, crashed into the barrier, causing its cargo to fall off the bridge into the river. Eight casualties have been confirmed,” the agency stated.
LASTMA also mentioned that recovery operations were still ongoing and urged commuters to stay calm and patient while officials worked to clear the area and restore normal traffic flow.
“Efforts are in full swing for the recovery and evacuation of the vehicles involved. There is a significant traffic backlog on Ogunnusi Road and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. LASTMA officers and other emergency responders are on-site managing the situation,” the statement concluded.
The collision triggered severe gridlock across connecting routes, with vehicular movement stretching from Berger through Ogunnusi Road and extending toward Mowe.
As of press time, emergency teams remained on-site conducting recovery operations, removing burnt vehicles, and ensuring the safe reopening of the affected lanes to motorists.
