Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has approved the extension of the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years and increased the years of service from 35 to 40, effective immediately.

The governor made the announcement on Sunday during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti.

In addition to the policy shift, Governor Oyebanji rewarded outstanding teachers with cash prizes totalling ₦46 million, acknowledging their dedication and contributions to the state’s education system.

He explained that the extension reflects his administration’s determination to “reposition the education sector and retain experienced educators,” noting that a committee will be set up to ensure the policy’s proper implementation. According to him, “only teachers who are physically fit” will be eligible for the benefit.

The governor further announced an upward review of allowances for Science Teachers and Heads of Departments, along with the immediate payment of outstanding 2019 leave bonus arrears, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to improving teachers’ welfare and motivation across the state.
