Liverpool’s new signing, Hugo Ekitike, has apologised to fans after receiving a red card for taking off his shirt while celebrating a late goal against Southampton on Tuesday.

The incident, which his manager Arne Slot called “stupid,” means the forward will be suspended for an upcoming Premier League match.

The 23-year-old French player scored the winning goal in the 85th minute of the League Cup match, sealing a 2-1 victory for Liverpool.

In a post on Instagram, Ekitike expressed that his “emotions got the better of him and apologised to the fans.

Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, was unimpressed, stating that the action was “needless” and that a player’s first thought after scoring should be to thank the teammate who assisted the goal.
