On Day 5 of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), once again spoke out against the ongoing infringement by law enforcement agencies on the rights to peaceful protest, freedom of expression, and freedom of the press.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) condemned the use of excessive force by law enforcement agencies resulting in the injury of several protesters and journalists, emphasising that this was a clear violation of the fundamental human rights of Nigerians.
In a press statement released by Mr Obinna Nwakonye, Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Ojukwu stated that citizens have the constitutional right to peacefully assemble and voice their grievances, as stipulated in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and other international human rights agreements ratified by Nigeria.
Ojukwu also emphasised the importance of journalists being able to carry out their duties as the societal watchdog without fear or intimidation, underscoring that these rights are crucial in a democratic society and should be upheld and safeguarded by law enforcement agencies.
The NHRC chief urged law enforcement agencies to adhere to international standards on policing protests and to respect the rule of engagement.
“We call on the relevant authorities to investigate these incidents and hold perpetrators accountable.
“At the NHRC, we will continue to monitor the situation and take necessary steps to ensure that human rights are protected and promoted in Nigeria,” he said.
The NHRC urged Nigerians with reliable evidence or information on the infringement of protesters’ rights, law enforcement agents’ rights, media rights, or innocent citizens’ rights to inform the commission through the proper communication channels.
