Endrick’s composed finish secured Real Madrid a 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Wednesday. The Brazilian teenager netted in the 19th minute, putting Madrid in control ahead of the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu on April 1.
The match was marred by controversy as it was briefly halted before halftime due to offensive chants directed at Madrid defender Raúl Asencio. A video circulating on social media also appeared to show a Real Sociedad fan making racist gestures towards Vinícius Júnior.
Madrid, missing Kylian Mbappé due to a dental issue along with Fede Valverde and Thibaut Courtois, still fielded a strong side despite several changes. Carlo Ancelotti handed starts to Arda Güler, Fran García, and Eduardo Camavinga, while Jude Bellingham returned from suspension.
Bellingham played a key role in the only goal, delivering a pinpoint diagonal pass to Endrick, who controlled the ball before slotting it home with the outside of his boot. It was Endrick’s sixth goal of the season, four of which have come in the Copa del Rey.
Madrid nearly extended their lead, with Vinícius testing Sociedad goalkeeper Álex Remiro and Endrick striking the crossbar from distance. At the other end, Andriy Lunin produced crucial saves to deny Mikel Oyarzabal and Takefusa Kubo.
Sociedad remain in the tie thanks to Remiro’s late stops from Bellingham, setting up an intriguing second leg in Madrid. Meanwhile, in the other semi-final, Atlético Madrid fought back to draw 4-4 with Barcelona in a thrilling encounter.
