Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on Friday the creation of a six-month interim administration in the northern Tigray region following recent military clashes between federal forces and regional rebels.
The cabinet decision aims to establish a stable political environment that will pave the way for free and transparent local elections.
Prime Minister Abiy’s office accused the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) of rejecting peace and sparking the latest devastating conflict after launching a major offensive on September 23, 2026.
Federal troops subsequently repelled the offensive, recapturing strategic strongholds and the regional capital after Tigray previously operated outside central government control and skipped the June elections won by the Prosperity Party.

The statement urged the people of Tigray to break free from continuous conflict to secure self-governance and economic development.
This latest escalation follows the devastating 2020–2022 war and comes as the TPLF forms new alliances with opposition armed groups and aligns more closely with neighbouring Eritrea.
