Ethiopia to Hold Elections June 1

Ethiopia will hold parliamentary elections on June 1, 2026, the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has announced.

NEBE’s chairperson, Melatwork Hailu, made this announcement on Tuesday during a press briefing about the preparations for the upcoming poll.

Hailu said NEBE has been undertaking a range of activities to ensure smooth conduct of the election.

According to her, efforts have been made to organise branch offices and ensure polling units are well arranged and conducive for voting.

Hailu also disclosed that political parties have received training designed to support them in publicising their programs to voters.

Registration of candidates will be carried out using software developed by the election board, she added.

The chairwoman stated that both political parties and independent aspirants will be able to register through the digital platform.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had told Parliament on October 28, 2025, that his government has “ capacity and the will necessary to conduct these elections.”

Ahmed added they will be the “best organised” in Ethiopia’s history.
