Dejan Kulusevski will be unavailable for Tottenham’s Europa League final against Manchester United after having knee surgery, a significant setback for the club’s ambitions to end their trophy drought.

Kulusevski sustained the injury during Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace when he was challenged by Marc Guehi, leading to his substitution in the 19th minute.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou offered a mixed evaluation after the match; however, additional scans revealed that the Swedish midfielder needed surgery.

“We can confirm that Dejan Kulusevski suffered an injury to his right patella in our Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace last weekend,” a Tottenham statement said.

Midfielder James Maddison was announced last week to be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Currently sitting 17th in the Premier League, Spurs will face United, just one position above them, in Bilbao on May 21.

Tottenham has not claimed a trophy since winning the League Cup in 2008 and has not experienced European success since securing the UEFA Cup in 1984.
