Eurostar has suspended all trains connecting London to Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels after a power supply issue in the Channel Tunnel on Tuesday.

“There was a power supply problem in the Channel tunnel, followed by a shuttle train coming to a halt inside,”  a Eurostar spokesperson said.

“All journeys to and from London are suspended until further notice.”

Eurostar’s website showed that services outside the Channel Tunnel, including routes between Paris and Brussels, were also cancelled.

As disruption notices were issued, crowds of stranded passengers carrying suitcases gathered at London’s St Pancras station and Paris’s Gare du Nord, with many realising their end-of-year travel plans were at risk.

Jessica, a 21-year-old business coordinator travelling with three friends, said she was disappointed as they had planned to spend New Year’s Eve in Paris.

Speaking in London, she told AFP they were searching for alternative tickets and would remain in the city if none were available.

Channel Tunnel operator Getlink said train traffic would gradually resume on Tuesday afternoon, but many passengers remained uncertain about when, or if, they would be able to travel.

Eurostar has advised passengers to postpone their journeys. The company urged travellers not to come to stations unless they already had tickets, warning that operating services were subject to severe delays and last-minute cancellations.

Eurostar carried a record 19.5 million passengers last year, nearly five percent more than in 2023, mainly driven by demand linked to the Paris Olympics and Paralympics.

The company has held a monopoly on passenger services through the Channel Tunnel since its opening in 1994.

Tuesday’s incident marked the latest disruption for Eurostar, which has faced criticism over high fares, particularly on the Paris-London route.

An electrical fault caused widespread cancellations and delays in August, while cable theft in northern France disrupted services for two days in June.
