Former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Nasiru Gawuna, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a letter dated March 29, 2026, addressed to the APC chairman of Gawuna Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area, Gawuna said his decision to leave the party was personal and voluntary.

“I hereby formally resign my membership of the All Progressives Congress, effective March 29, 2026,” the letter read in part.

He expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities he enjoyed during his membership, noting that he was formally stepping down with immediate effect.

Gawuna, who was the APC governorship candidate in Kano State during the 2023 general elections, was a major contender in the race after securing 890,705 votes. He, however, did not indicate his next political move.

His resignation comes as political realignments in Kano State continue ahead of future elections.

Sources close to the former deputy governor allegedly indicated that he is expected to meet with former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, fuelling speculation about a possible political alliance.

The development follows his recent resignation as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, a position he relinquished in compliance with a directive requiring political appointees to step down in line with provisions of the Electoral Act.

In a separate letter dated March 27, 2026, Gawuna stated that his resignation from the federal appointment would take effect on March 31, and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve in various roles, including as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano.

His recent moves have intensified speculation that he may be considering a new political platform as activity builds ahead of the 2027 general elections.
