A former Mexican federal agent who had testified against the son of one of the country’s most notorious drug lords was shot and killed on Wednesday in the central state of Morelos, according to authorities.
Ivan Morales, who was a prosecution witness in the US trial of Ruben Oseguera Gonzalez, a key figure in Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was murdered alongside his wife. Oseguera Gonzalez was sentenced to life in prison by a Washington court in March.
Ruben’s father, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, is the leader of the CJNG, which is one of Mexico’s most dangerous and influential criminal organisations. The US has placed a $15 million bounty on his head.
The attack took place in the Temixco area, around 60 miles (100 kilometres) from Mexico City, as Morales and his wife were travelling in their vehicle. State prosecutors are currently investigating the incident and have not ruled out the possibility of revenge as a motive, local reports suggest.
Morales, a former federal agent, had narrowly survived one of Mexico’s most notorious drug cartel attacks in 2015. On May 1 of that year, a military helicopter carrying 16 soldiers and two federal officers was shot down during a failed operation to capture Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes in the western state of Jalisco. Nine people died, but Morales managed to escape the wreckage despite suffering severe burns that left part of his face disfigured.
The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which Morales testified against, is one of the most powerful criminal organisations in Mexico and has been labelled a foreign terrorist group by the US government.
