The former chairman of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Force, Abdulrasheed Maina, was hospitalised in Abuja on Tuesday after collapsing while entering his office

The incident, confirmed by his media aide Emmanuel Ekwe, was linked to complications from an untreated knee injury.

Ekwe said Maina reportedly lost his balance, fell, and struck his head on a staircase.

“Dr Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, slumped on the evening of Tuesday, February 3, 2026, while attempting to access his office premises,” Ekwe said.

“The incident occurred following complications arising from an untreated knee injury, which caused him to lose balance and fall, resulting in his head hitting the staircase.”

According to him, medical personnel administered first aid on the scene before rushing Maina to a private hospital in the Federal Capital Territory, where he is currently receiving “intensive medical care and remains under observation”.

He also revealed that after a preliminary medical evaluation, one of the attending physicians suggested that plans be made for an air ambulance medical evacuation in case his condition did not improve quickly.

“His family and medical team are closely monitoring his progress. The family appeals to the public for prayers, understanding, and respect for privacy at this critical time.”

Maina was recently released from Kuje Correctional Centre after serving a jail term for pension fraud.

In November 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him of money laundering involving over N2 billion, with the Court of Appeal upholding both the conviction and his eight-year sentence in May 2023.

The funds were said to belong to pensioners, many of whom had passed away before benefitting from their savings.
