The Kwara State Government has confirmed an explosion in the Woro community, Kaiama Local Government Area, causing renewed security concerns in the region.

Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, said the incident involved an improvised explosive device (IED) that detonated along a road outside the community on Monday morning.

He explained that the device went off as a vehicle passed over it.

According to him, a male occupant of the vehicle died on the spot, while a woman and her child, who were also in the vehicle, were affected.

He added that the woman sustained injuries and has been taken to the hospital, where she is responding to treatment, while the child was unharmed.

“The IED incident occurred on a road a distance from Woro. The device went off as a vehicle rode past it on Monday morning,” Ajakaye stated.

“Sadly, the man died instantly, while his passenger, a woman travelling with a little child, sustained injuries.”

The incident has heightened tension among residents, many of whom are still reeling from previous attacks in the area.

Also commenting, the Special Assistant on Media to the Kaiama Local Government Chairman, ZulQharnain Shero Musa, said the explosion resulted in casualties, although the exact number has yet to be confirmed.

He noted that preliminary findings suggest the device may have been planted by suspected insurgents, adding that the vehicle triggered the explosion after running over the IED.

“There was an explosion around Woro this morning. The explosion claimed lives, though the number of casualties is not yet confirmed.

“A car drove over an IED. We believe it was planted by Boko Haram members,” Musa explained.

The latest incident comes weeks after a deadly February attack on the same community, during which suspected armed men reportedly stormed the area, opened fire and forced residents to flee, leaving several people dead and others injured.

That earlier assault displaced many families, disrupted livelihoods and intensified calls for a stronger security presence in the area. With the renewed violence, residents are again urging authorities to take decisive steps to protect lives and prevent further attacks.
