The Super Falcons of Nigeria have secured their spot in the finals of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) taking place in Morocco.
The team defeated the Bayana Bayana of South Africa 2-1 in the semifinal held at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco on Tuesday.
A last-minute shot-cross from Gloria Alozie proved decisive for the fatigued Falcons against the determined South Africans, following exchanged penalty kicks successfully converted by Rasheedat Ajibade and Lucy Matlhalo, respectively.
As the defending champions of WAFCON, South Africa has consistently posed a challenge for Nigeria, the multiple-time WAFCON champions, making this victory a form of retribution for a group stage defeat in the previous WAFCON edition.
Throughout the first half, the Falcons maintained a dominant performance but were thwarted by a combination of an impressive save from South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini and a goal-line clearance by Bambanani Mbane.
Late in the first half, Nigeria claimed the lead. Folashade Ijamilusi earned a penalty for the Falcons, which captain Rasheedat Ajibade confidently converted, putting them ahead 1-0 as they went into the break.
The Banyana Banyana showed improvement in the second half, moving the ball effectively, and were awarded a penalty when Osinachi Ohale fouled Linda Motlhalo, allowing Chiamaka Nnadozie to be tricked and resulting in a 1-1 tie at the 60-minute mark.
South Africa looked stronger during this period, having two opportunities to take the lead, but Ohale cleared one shot off the line, and Jermaine Seoposenwe failed to find the target with another good chance.
In a surprising turn of events, Nigeria secured the winning goal during added time. The South African goalkeeper misjudged Alozie’s deep cross while being pressured by Deborah Abiodun and Christy Ucheibe, leading the ball to find the net for a 2-1 score in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
The Super Falcons successfully defended their lead to achieve a huge win, allowing Justin Madugu’s team to advance to the final and will face either Ghana or Morocco in the final scheduled for Saturday.
