Fatal Building Collapse in Fez Leaves Nine Dead, Seven Injured

A condemned apartment block collapsed in Morocco’s northern city of Fez on Thursday night, killing nine people and injuring seven others, according to local officials.

The multi-storey building, located in the Al-Hassani neighbourhood, had previously been deemed structurally unsafe and was under an evacuation order, authorities confirmed on Friday.

Several of the injured are reported to be in serious condition. Emergency crews continued to search through the rubble for potential survivors or further victims, while neighbouring buildings have been cleared as a safety measure.

This latest incident has revived concerns over the safety of aging or poorly maintained structures in the historic city. In a similar tragedy in February last year, five people were killed when a building collapsed in Fez’s old town.
