Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared the winner of the Abaji Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The result, announced on Sunday by the presiding officer, Muhammad Usman, showed that Abubakar secured 15,535 votes to defeat his closest rival from the Young Progressives Party (YPP), who polled 5,357 votes.Â

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate followed with 4,547 votes, while the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) recorded 53 and 37 votes respectively.
Usman confirmed that Abubakar met all legal requirements and was therefore returned elected as chairman of the council.
The declaration came less than 24 hours after voting concluded on Saturday, February 21, 2026, across the six area councils of the FCT, Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali.
With the outcome, the APC secured victories in Abaji, Kwali, AMAC and Bwari, while the PDP clinched Gwagwalada.
