The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mohammed Kasim, has been declared the winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election held during Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory polls.

Announcing the result early Sunday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, said Kasim polled 22,165 votes to defeat Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 17,788 votes.

Akpen indicated that the election was conducted peacefully and without major disruptions, noting that Kasim met all legal requirements and was duly returned elected. He added that Biko Umar of the All Progressives Grand Alliance came third with 1,687 votes.

The election formed part of the FCT-wide local government polls held across the six area councils, Abuja Municipal Area Council, Abaji, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali, covering both chairmanship and councillorship positions.

In the Gwagwalada Area Council, a total of 207,577 voters were registered, out of which 46,294 were accredited to participate in the election. The PDP secured the highest number of votes with 22,165, while the APC followed with 17,788 votes. The All Progressives Grand Alliance recorded 1,687 votes, while the African Democratic Congress polled 1,366.

Other parties trailed with significantly lower figures, as the Social Democratic Party garnered 432 votes, the New Nigeria Peoples Party recorded 175 votes, while parties such as ADP, AA, YPP, A, and APM received smaller vote counts.

Overall, the total number of valid votes stood at 43,960, with 1,521 ballots rejected.
