A filling station along the Bukuru Expressway in Jos, Plateau State, was gutted by fire on Thursday morning.
The petroleum and cooking gas station, located near the Jos South Local Government Secretariat, was reported to have caught fire from around its main underground petroleum storage tank, heightening fears about the possible extent of the damage.
Witnesses said firefighters were not on the scene when the fire broke out, and station workers were seen making desperate attempts to control the blaze before emergency responders arrived.

One passer-by, identified as Maman, said the fire was first noticed early in the morning at the filling station popularly known as Chill Cherry.
Customers and passers-by were said to have fled the vicinity in fear, particularly because the station also operates a cooking gas outlet, raising concerns over the risk of explosions.
A customer who escaped from the scene said he observed emergency response vehicles speeding toward the area and expressed hope that their swift intervention would help contain the fire, noting what he described as improved coordination between federal and state fire service agencies.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Federal Fire Service in Plateau State, CSF EE Anzolo, said personnel of the Plateau State Fire Service had been deployed to the scene to manage the situation.
