The government of Eswatini announced on Wednesday that it is detaining five individuals from other countries who were deported from the United States in separate prison facilities, as part of an agreement with the administration of President Donald Trump. However, the government aims to return them to their home countries eventually.

According to the U.S. Homeland Security Department, a deportation flight carrying immigrants from five different nations arrived in Eswatini after the U.S. Supreme Court removed restrictions on deporting migrants to countries that are not their own.

The flight included five convicted criminals from Vietnam, Jamaica, Laos, Cuba, and Yemen, as noted by the Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin on X, who said that the countries of origin had declined to accept them back.

“Government acknowledges the widespread concern regarding the deportation of third-country prisoners from the United States of America into the Kingdom of Eswatini,” said Eswatini’s acting government spokesperson Thabile Mdluli in a statement.

“Indeed, five inmates are currently housed in our correctional facilities in isolated units,” she said, adding that this was “the result of months of robust high-level engagements” with the United States government.

Eswatini, a landlocked country located in Southern Africa, has a population of approximately 1.2 million people and is governed by an absolute monarch who has held power since 1986.

The announcement indicated that Eswatini and the United States would work together with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to facilitate the process of repatriating inmates to their home countries.
