Reports of Nigeria’s former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, made rounds on Tuesday afternoon. Controversy surrounds his removal, with some sources saying he was sacked by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while others say he resigned.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed Ebetokun’s resignation to ICIR on Tuesday.

“It is true. He has resigned. He was not sacked by the President,” said Onanuga.

While the details of his resignation remain sketchy, one thing is certain – Egbetokun’s reign as the head of the Nigerian Police Force has come to an end. Sources say Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIGP) Tunji Disu is expected to replace him.

Here are five things to know about Tunji Disu:

Early Days

Olatunji Disu was born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island. He began his early education in Holy Cross Cathedral Primary School. He also attended Mayflower Junior School in Ikenna, Ogun State and completed his secondary education at Pobuna Secondary Grammar School, Epe, and St Gregory’s College, Lagos.

Career

Disu is a veteran Nigerian police officer with over three decades of service. He joined the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. He has risen through the ranks of the NPF and held multiple positions.

Disu served as commissioner of police in Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He served as a Commander of the Rapid Response Squad from 2015 to 2021 and was appointed Rivers State Commissioner of Police in 2023. His tenure, however, was short-lived in 2024, when Egbetokun reshuffled police officials and appointed him as the FCT Commissioner of Police.

He was the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad(RRS) in Lagos between 2015 and 2021.

Disu was redeployed to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, as the unit’s head on February 2, 2026.

Egbetokun appointed Disu to lead and coordinate the administration of the IGP’s office as his principal staff in 2023. Egbetokun was the acting IGP at the time.
