Barcelona coach Hansi Flick says midfielder Gavi is available for Sunday’s La Liga match against Sevilla FC after a lengthy injury lay-off.

The 21-year-old Spain international suffered a serious knee injury in August and is expected to start the match on the bench at Camp Nou.

The midfielder has shown promise in training, according to Flick, and he might play briefly if necessary.

“He’s available, I’m happy, maybe he’s also available for some minutes, it’s good to have him back and you can see in the training his dynamic,” Flick told reporters.

“I like what I see, but also we have to take care of him.”

Gavi missed most of the 2023–24 season with another knee injury, and Barcelona have at times lacked the intensity he brings to midfield.

Flick praised the player’s mindset during his return to fitness.

“At the moment he’s got the right attitude from what I can see and this is good,” added Flick.

“I love his intention to play, to give everything for this club and this team, and it’s good news that he’s back.”

Barcelona currently lead the La Liga standings by four points ahead of Real Madrid, who play Elche CF on Saturday.

The Catalan side will also face Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

When asked whether teenage star Lamine Yamal could be rested for the Sevilla match, Flick said the decision had not yet been made.

“We will see,” he said.
