Severe flash floods in northwest Syria have claimed the lives of two children and a Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteer, according to state reports on Sunday.

The volunteer died when her rescue vehicle veered into a valley during an emergency mission, while torrents in the Ain Issa area swept away the two children.

The deluge has devastated at least 14 displacement camps in the Idlib and Latakia regions, swamping the tents of approximately 300 families.

Authorities are currently conducting rescue operations and clearing roads to reach those stranded.

The ousting of the previous regime in 2024 ignited strong hopes for the return of Syria’s seven million internally displaced persons. However, this latest disaster starkly reveals the critical vulnerability of those living in areas where infrastructure has been destroyed.
