Steve Bannon, a former chief adviser to US President Donald Trump, has claimed that Trump will return to the White House for a “third term” in 2028, even though the US Constitution clearly limits presidents to two terms.
In an interview with The Economist released on Thursday, Bannon said that Trump’s leadership is vital for the nation and emphasised that plans are already underway to facilitate this.
“He’s going to get a third term,” Bannon said. “Trump is going to be president in ’28, and people just sort of need to get accommodated to that.”

When questioned about the 22nd Amendment, which forbids anyone from being elected president more than twice, Bannon hinted at a strategy to bypass this limitation, saying that details would be disclosed “at the appropriate time.”
He described Trump as an “instrument of divine will,” claiming that it aligns with the “will of the American people” for him to continue guiding the nation.
“If the American people, with the mechanisms we have, put Trump back in office, are the American people tearing up the Constitution?” he asked.
The 22nd Amendment, which was ratified in 1951 following Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four-term presidency, clearly states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
Legal scholars maintain that there is no constitutional route for a third elected term, although some of Trump’s supporters have proposed theories regarding succession or a reinterpretation of the amendment.
Trump, who is currently in his second term, has not publicly supported or mentioned pursuing a third term in office.
