Former governors of Plateau State, Jonah Jang and Simon Lalong, have pledged to collaborate in addressing the worsening security situation in the state.

They made this known on Thursday in Jos during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to the north-central state.

The president’s visit followed a security breach on Sunday in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, which resulted in the deaths of 28 people and left several others injured.

Speaking at the event, Jang described the incident as one too many and emphasised the need for collective action among leaders to tackle the growing insecurity.

He noted that the persistent violence was undermining economic stability and warned that it could be part of broader efforts to destabilise the 2027 general elections.

Reflecting on the state’s history, he maintained that Plateau had long been known as a centre for peace and tourism, despite recurring security challenges under successive administrations.

He pointed out that past governors, including Joshua Dariye, himself, and Lalong, had all grappled with similar issues, adding that the current governor, Caleb Mutfwang, was facing the same challenge.

“I believe Plateau is still the home of peace and tourism. As governor, Joshua Dariye faced security challenges; I faced them, Simon Lalong went through them, and now Caleb Mutfwang is facing them too.

“But, we will unite to fight this monster; some people want to sabotage the next election but, by the grace of God, we will resist it,” Jang said.

Jang expressed confidence that a united effort among stakeholders would help confront the situation, stressing that any attempts to undermine future elections would be resisted.

He also urged the president to convene a dedicated meeting with Plateau leaders to discuss practical solutions and adopt a more proactive security approach.

Lalong, who currently represents Plateau South in the Senate, supported Jang’s position and reaffirmed his commitment to promoting unity and peace in the state. He lamented the persistence of insecurity, noting that his experience in leadership had exposed him to its recurring nature.
