Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has died this afternoon at a private clinic in London. He was 82.
In a statement signed by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, the family announced the passing of the former leader, saying,
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of Muhammadu Buhari. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”

Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, after defeating incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in a landmark election. Prior to that, he ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from December 1983 to August 1985, following a coup that ousted President Shehu Shagari.
Known for his anti-corruption stance and tough approach to governance, Buhari’s legacy remains a subject of national debate, spanning economic reform, security challenges, and efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s infrastructure.
He had battled undisclosed health issues for several years and had frequently sought medical care in the United Kingdom during his presidency.
Further details about funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
