Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has appointed social commentator and former staunch critic of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Tinubu, Reno Omokri, as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Mexico.
Omokri’s ambassadorial approval was confirmed alongside that of 64 ambassadors-designate to Nigerian diplomatic missions across the world and at the United Nations on Friday.
Omokri is among Nigeria’s newly appointed 31 career diplomats and 34 non-career ambassadors whose nominations were confirmed by the Nigerian Senate in December 2025.
Omokri served as the Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan on New Media during Jonathan’s administration, from 2011 to 2015.
During that period, he strongly defended the Jonathan administration and criticised opposition politicians, particularly members of the then-opposition party, APC, which sought to unseat the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s ruling party at the time.

He was a vocal critic of the late Former President Muhammadu Buhari, who was the APC’s presidential candidate in the 2015 election and Tinubu’s ally. He accused the APC of lacking clear economic policies.
Omokri was also among the public commentators who raised questions about Tinubu’s educational background, especially regarding claims about attending Chicago State University during the 2023 elections. He had also referred to past allegations linking Bola Ahmed Tinubu to drug trafficking, but usually in the context of publicly documented U.S. court records from the 1990s.
After the 2023 election, Omokri, however, switched stance and became a defender of Tinubu and his policies.
