A deadly landslide triggered by torrential rainfall has claimed the lives of four people and left eight others missing in northern China’s Hebei province, state media reported on Monday, as intense downpours continue to batter the region, forcing thousands from their homes.
The landslide occurred in Chengde City and was attributed to the heavy rainfall that has swept across northern China in recent days, according to state broadcaster CCTV. The national emergency management department has dispatched a team to assess the serious flooding affecting the province, which surrounds the capital, Beijing.
Hebei has experienced record rainfall, with state media confirming that two people died in earlier flooding on Saturday. Over the weekend, more than 4,600 residents in Fuping County were evacuated as a precaution against further disasters.

Neighbouring Shanxi province has also been impacted, with one person rescued and 13 others unaccounted for following a bus accident linked to the extreme weather, CCTV reported. Broadcast footage revealed roads and crop fields submerged beneath torrents of water.
In Beijing, the severe conditions have led to the evacuation of over 3,000 people from the Miyun district, a suburban area of the capital. Authorities reported that the local reservoir experienced its largest water inflow since it was constructed more than 60 years ago. State media also shared images of vehicles being swept away by floodwaters.
China regularly experiences natural disasters during the summer months, with certain areas enduring severe rainfall while others face stifling heatwaves. This year has been no exception, with flash floods and landslides causing fatalities and widespread disruption.
The country is both the largest emitter of greenhouse gases and a global leader in renewable energy. It has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, but continues to grapple with the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events linked to climate change.
Earlier this month, flash floods in Shandong province, eastern China, killed two people and left 10 missing. Another deadly landslide in Sichuan province, in the southwest, swept vehicles down a mountainside and claimed five lives.
