Rivers State lawmakers say the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu will continue, arguing it is the only way to resolve the political impasse in the state.
Speaking to reporters on Friday after the Assembly failed to reconvene on Thursday as scheduled, they defended the impeachment as constitutional and within their legislative duties, and dismissed criticisms as unfounded.
The briefing followed a day after Speaker Martin Amaewhule led the House, which had adjourned the previous week, failed to resume plenary on Thursday.
Last week, the Assembly began impeachment proceedings over alleged gross misconduct, including the demolition of the Assembly complex and unapproved spending of public funds.
The process has faced pushback, with four lawmakers withdrawing earlier in the week, urging an amicable resolution.
Despite expectations of a Thursday reconvening, there was no plenary, prompting questions about internal divisions within the House. Nonetheless, the lawmakers reiterated on Friday that the impeachment path remains on course.
