Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Saturday said he remains the governor of Rivers State and will continue to carry out the responsibilities of his office despite the impeachment proceedings initiated by the state’s lawmakers.
Fubara spoke at the finals of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament, held in Port Harcourt, where he was the special guest. He said protecting lives and property remains a core responsibility of his government and that his administration would continue to implement policies and commitments made to the state’s residents.
“What is important is that I am still the governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to do what we have promised the Rivers people,” Fubara said.
The governor expressed satisfaction that there were no incidents during the week-long competition, citing the calm environment as evidence that Rivers State is secure for locals, tourists, and investors.
“I am happy that you had your tournament for one week, and the president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club told me there was no incident. It shows that we are working and that Rivers State is safe. That is the basic responsibility of government,” he added.
Governor Fubara, however, expressed disappointment over the state’s ongoing political crises, noting that for the past three years, they have coincided with the annual polo tournament.
“It is really unfortunate that each time you are having your tournament, there is always one problem. In 2024, you came to me and made some promises, but that January was hell,” he lamented.
Despite the challenges, he said the state government would continue to perform its duties and support initiatives to develop Rivers State.
