Marking the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion, G7 leaders released a joint statement on Tuesday reaffirming their “unwavering support” for Ukraine.
This declaration is particularly significant as it represents the first unified stance by the group—comprising the U.S., UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan—since Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
The leaders emphasised a collective desire to see a resolution to the conflict, which has devastated eastern Ukraine and displaced millions since February 2022.
The statement explicitly backed President Trump’s recent diplomatic initiatives, expressing support for his efforts to launch a formal peace process and bring both parties to the negotiating table.
The G7 leaders noted that while the U.S. has been mediating talks in Geneva and Abu Dhabi, Europe must now take a “leading role” in the process.

They further stressed that a lasting peace agreement can only be reached through “good faith negotiations” between Kyiv and Moscow.
In addition to diplomatic support, the G7 addressed the immediate humanitarian and logistical needs of the country during another harsh winter of combat.
In recent weeks, the group has provided critical energy equipment, including generators and turbines.
They also announced that over half a billion euros have been pledged since January to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, specifically aimed at repairing and protecting a power grid that has been a frequent target of Russian strikes.
Despite this unified front, the path to peace remains fraught with difficulty.
While the G7 voiced support for a “Coalition of the Willing” to offer security guarantees in the event of a ceasefire, the fundamental disagreement over territory continues to stall progress.
Four years after Moscow’s failed attempt to seize Kyiv in a matter of days, the conflict remains a gruelling war of attrition with a death toll in the hundreds of thousands.
