Gaza’s Last Cancer Hospital Shuts Down After Israeli Attack, WHO Confirms

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed that the final hospital in Gaza capable of treating cancer and cardiac patients is no longer functional following an Israeli strike earlier this week.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the European Hospital in Khan Yunis was “severely damaged and inaccessible” after Tuesday’s assault, forcing the evacuation of remaining emergency medical staff. “The hospital’s closure has cut off vital services including neurosurgery, cardiac care, and cancer treatment — all unavailable elsewhere in Gaza,” Tedros stated on X.

The European Hospital had also served as a key centre for medical evacuations, and its shutdown marks a further blow to an already overwhelmed healthcare system. The staff were relocated to the nearby Nasser Medical Complex, which itself was struck earlier that day, according to Tedros.

Medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) described the facility as “one of the last remaining lifelines in Gaza’s shattered healthcare system,” and warned that most remaining hospitals are only partially functioning and under immense strain.

“The repeated strikes on healthcare facilities are yet more examples of the Israeli authorities making the Strip unlivable,” MSF said on social media.

Dr. Tedros reiterated WHO’s appeal for the protection of healthcare services in conflict zones, stating: “Hospitals must never be militarised or targeted. Ceasefire.”

The closure comes as the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with repeated warnings from aid agencies that the region’s health infrastructure is nearing total collapse during non-stop, intense bombardment by the Israeli military.
