On Saturday, the centre-left SPD and German conservative Friedrich Merz announced that they had struck an in-principle agreement to establish a government that will make significant investments to restructure and revitalise the biggest economy in Europe.

Following the February 23 elections, Merz, the incoming chancellor, and SPD leader Lars Klingbeil said that they had successfully concluded exploratory talks and would now proceed to official negotiations to establish a coalition government.
