Rockstar Games has announced that the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, the highly anticipated next chapter in its blockbuster video game series, has been pushed back to May 2026. The game was initially slated for launch later this year, but the publisher confirmed the delay on Friday, citing the need for additional development time to meet the high standards expected by fans.
In a statement, Rockstar acknowledged the disappointment the delay may cause but emphasised its commitment to delivering a game that surpasses expectations. “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected,” the company said. “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception.”
The sixth installment in the franchise is set to return players to Vice City, a fictional city inspired by Miami, and for the first time, will feature a female protagonist as one of the central playable characters. The game’s initial trailer, released to widespread excitement, hinted at a modern, high-octane take on the iconic open-world format that has defined the series.
While fans will now have to wait a little longer, Rockstar assured players that the extra development time is essential to delivering a polished and immersive experience worthy of the GTA legacy.
