Eric Dane, widely known for his role as Dr Mark Sloan in the hit medical drama ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, has died at the age of 53, according to US media reports on Thursday.

Dane had revealed last year that he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological condition commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

In a statement carried by several US outlets, including CBS, his family said he died on Thursday afternoon after battling the illness.

They described his fight against ALS as courageous and expressed deep sorrow over his passing.

Born in San Francisco, Dane began his television career with a 1991 appearance on Saved by the Bell.

His career breakthrough came in 2006 when he joined Grey’s Anatomy, portraying the charismatic plastic surgeon Dr Mark Sloan. He featured in 139 episodes of the long-running series before departing in 2021.

Beyond his role in the ABC drama, Dane also appeared in the HBO series Euphoria, further cementing his presence on American television.
