Pep Guardiola declared that Manchester City must reset and start from zero after a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, marking their sixth loss in seven matches. The result saw City slip 11 points behind the Premier League leaders and further widened the gap between them and the top four.
Liverpool continued their commanding form under manager Arne Slot, with Cody Gakpo opening the scoring early and Mohamed Salah converting a penalty 13 minutes from time. Slot’s side has now won 18 of their 20 matches this season, extending their lead over Arsenal and Chelsea to nine points.
“I congratulate Liverpool; they deserve the victory,” said Guardiola after the match. “We accept the situation right now and will build from that. We’ll reset and start from zero… We’ll see what happens by the end of the season.”
Guardiola faced chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” from jubilant Liverpool fans as the game neared its end. The Manchester City manager responded by holding up six fingers, a nod to his six Premier League titles in the past seven seasons.
Liverpool’s dominance under Slot has shifted the landscape at the top of the league. After years of finishing behind City under former manager Jürgen Klopp, Slot’s Reds are threatening to end the title race before Christmas with their electric start to the season.
“I don’t think anyone, including me, would have predicted this,” admitted Slot. “I knew Jurgen left the team in a very good place. But still, to win so much with all the difficult teams we have played already is not something you could predict at the start of the season.
“But I saw Arsenal yesterday and Chelsea today and I saw City, they will come back because these teams have so much quality. They could go on the same run as us. So we have to stay sharp and focused.”
While Liverpool’s title charge continues to gain momentum, Guardiola and City face an uphill battle to salvage their season, with a Champions League spot now far from guaranteed.
