Guinea-Bissau opposition figure Domingos Simões Pereira was freed on Friday after months in detention following last November’s military coup.

Pereira was among several senior politicians jailed after the armed forces ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and took control of the government, just days after the country’s presidential election.

The junta said the intervention was aimed at averting violence between supporters of rival candidates.

An AFP journalist reported that Pereira was escorted to his residence on the outskirts of the capital, Bissau, by security personnel and Senegal’s visiting defence minister.

The November takeover, carried out before official election results were announced, marked the fifth coup in Guinea-Bissau since independence from Portugal in 1974.

The country has long struggled with deep poverty, weak governance, and recurring political instability, conditions that have also fuelled corruption and drug trafficking.
