Guinea Bissau’s Former Premier Barred from Travelling

Ex-Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau Domingos Simoes Pereira has been barred from leaving the nation following an investigation into an alleged coup attempt last year.

The decision to bar the ex-Prime Minister comes following a failed coup attempt in the notoriously turbulent West African country, which resulted in the death of 11 people.

While President Umaro Sissoco Embalo was chairing a cabinet meeting on February 1, heavily armed men attacked government buildings in Bissau’s capital.

Pereira had been placed under judicial review the day before, Attorney-General Bacary Biaye told newsmen on Wednesday, meaning he couldn’t leave the country without permission.

The decision is linked to a separate purported scheme to depose Embalo in April 2021, the details of which are yet to be made public.
