Guinean authorities have moved to quell growing concerns regarding the medical fitness of President Mamady Doumbouya, who has been absent from the country for over two weeks.

The 41-year-old leader, who seized power in a 2021 coup and was recently inaugurated for a seven-year term, has not returned to Conakry since departing for an African Union summit in Ethiopia on February 13.

This prolonged absence sparked intense speculation across local media, prompting his advisors to issue formal reassurances that the President remains in “good health.”

According to presidential advisor Thierno Mamadou Bah, Doumbouya utilised his time following the summit to undergo a routine medical check-up and take a period of rest.

While the government has not disclosed his specific location, Bah emphasised that such medical precautions are standard for a leader concerned with maintaining his full capacity to act.

The administration further promised that the President would return to the capital within the next few days, describing the results of his health assessment as “reassuring.”

Doumbouya’s absence is particularly notable given his increasingly low public profile over the past several months.

During his recent election campaign—a vote from which all major opposition leaders were barred—he appeared only once at a closing rally without speaking and again briefly to cast his ballot.

Despite his limited public engagements, he was sworn in before tens of thousands of supporters in January, solidifying his grip on a nation that has faced significant crackdowns on civil liberties under his rule.

Since toppling Guinea’s first freely elected president, Alpha Condé, Doumbouya has presided over a period of strict authoritarianism, characterised by the banning of protests and the imprisonment or exile of political opponents.

As the nation waits for his return, the current silence surrounding his whereabouts serves as a reminder of Guinea’s complex and often volatile history of military governance.
