The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that at least 33 people were killed in an attack by suspected gunmen on Bui District in Arewa Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement issued on Friday in Birnin Kebbi, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bashir Usman, said the assault occurred on Wednesday when heavily armed men, believed to be Lakurawa militants, stormed the district, allegedly to rustle cattle.

Preliminary findings suggest the attackers may have entered the area from the Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

“During the attack, residents of Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal and Dan Mai Ago mobilised in response to the invasion.

“In the ensuing confrontation, 33 persons lost their lives,” he said.

Usman stated that security forces, working alongside the military and other agencies, have strengthened their presence in the affected communities. He noted that additional personnel and operational resources have been deployed, while continuous patrols are underway to stabilise the area and prevent further attacks. The command extended condolences to the families of the victims and the wider Arewa community, describing the incident as tragic.

Usman stressed that dealing with well-armed criminal groups requires coordinated security action and warned residents against attempting to confront such elements directly due to the serious risks involved.

He urged the public to report suspicious movements through appropriate security channels and disclosed that targeted operations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible.

The attack comes with heightened security concerns in Kebbi and neighbouring states, where armed groups have carried out deadly raids, kidnappings and extortion.

Recently, suspected terrorists reportedly sent a letter to a community in Ngaski Local Government Area, allegedly demanding N100 million before being allowed entry into the town to “preach.”
