Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, warned on Thursday that the conflict in the Middle East could spiral into a broader war, urging an immediate halt to US-Israeli strikes on Iran as well as Iranian attacks on neighbouring countries.

“We are on the edge of a wider war that would engulf the Middle East with dramatic impacts around the globe,” the secretary-general told reporters in New York.

His remarks reflect growing international concern that the conflict has escalated beyond expectations, with fears of severe humanitarian and global economic consequences if hostilities continue.
Guterres stressed the global economic stakes, warning that the current disruption to the Strait of Hormuz is choking the flow of critical commodities.
